The American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education at its spring meeting granted the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine full accreditation for five years (the normal accreditation cycle). A formal notice was sent to the School of Veterinary Medicine in March. The AVMA COE is the professional body charged with assuring the high quality of veterinary medical education in North America.

"I am proud of our faculty, staff, and especially our students. The attainment of full accreditation status for the School of Veterinary Medicine would not have been possible without their dedication,” said Dr. Tsegaye Habtemariam, Dean of the Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health.

The AVMA COE commended TUSVM for its efforts in increasing the small animal and equine case loads to improve student learning; the implementation of year-round clinical rotations to improve student learning through hands-on clinical case exposure; the higher pass rate scores for the national licensing examination; and the School’s commitment to diversity in the student body.

TUSVM’s Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is also accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, and has been an accredited practice member of the association since 1992. Only 15 percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved accreditation by the agency.

The Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health is composed of the School of Veterinary Medicine (animal health) and the School of Nursing and Allied Health (human health). The College is the only one of its kind in the U.S. where animal health and human health are interlinked and merged in one College within the framework of the “One Health-One Medicine” approach. TUSVM is the most racially, ethnically and culturally diverse school of veterinary medicine in North America. It is alma mater to more than 70 percent of the African-American veterinarians in the U.S. TUSVM graduates hold key leadership positions in the government, military, academia and in the international arena.
