History-making Kidney Exchange
Seven Washington, D.C. area residents in need of kidney transplants, but with antibodies so high that a traditional donor match was virtually impossible, were successfully transplanted during four days in July, making it the largest kidney exchange of its kind to take place in one city."There are 6,000 people on dialysis in the D.C. area on a given day. We do about 200-250 kidney transplants a year at all hospitals in this city. Using plasmapheresis, we hope to double that number of kidney transplants," said J. Keith Melancon, MD, director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Surgery at Georgetown University Hospital.

New Jersey Institute of Technology To Fete Former Astronaut
Philanthropist, astronaut and entrepreneur Bernard Harris, MD, of Houston, will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters at New Jersey Institute of Technology's 2009 Commencement Ceremony to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2009. In education circles, the recipient is known for the Bernard Harris Summer Camp, a two-week opportunity to encourage middle school students to pursue a career in science or related fields. Harris is also CEO of Vesalius Ventures, a venture capital firm in Houston focused in medical informatics and technology (or telemedicine).
