The Miracle at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC)
UMBC President, Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski, has been honored as one of the nation's top 10 best college presidents. Science Spectrum Online's sister publication, USBE&IT magazine, spoke to Dr. Hrabowski in the fall of 2005 about the part diversity has played in UMBC's amazing story. The University is among the nation's leading schools in the number of undergraduate degrees awarded to black students in the sciences.

Presidential Awards for Lab Scientists
President Obama recently named 2 Department of Energy lab scientists as winners of Presidential Awards. Kennedy Reed, a physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, was presented a prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Engineering Mentoring. Reed is a theoretical physicist researching atomic collisions in high-temperature plasmas.

Osman Sankoh named Executive Director at INDEPTH Network
September 05, 2007—Osman Sankoh, PhD, has been appointed executive director of INDEPTH Network, an international organization of field sites that provides health and demographic data and research to enable developing countries to set health priorities and policies. Dr. Sankoh succeeds Fred Binka, PhD, who has led INDEPTH since 2000.

Camellia Moses Okpodu named American Council on Education Fellow
David Ward, president of the American Council on Education, recently announced that Camellia Moses Okpodu, professor and chair of the biology department at Norfolk State University, has been named an ACE Fellow for the 2007-08 academic year. Okpodu, who was nominated by NSU President Carolyn W. Meyers, is one of 39 fellows who were nominated by their respective university presidents or chancellors in this year's national competition.

Ryan Clark among Virginia Tech dead
Ryan Clark, a Virginia Tech student set to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology with a focus in cognitive neuroscience, was one of more than 30 people confirmed dead after yesterday’s tragic shootings at Virginia Tech. According to reports, Clark, a resident advisor in the West Ambler Johnston dormitory on campus, was the male victim who died in the dorm. A five-year veteran of the Marching Virginians and a member of Circle K, the student service organization, Clark had been scheduled to graduate next month with degrees in English and biology
